SNOW HILL, Md. (AP) -- Five firefighters charged with destroying mailboxes in Maryland by throwing watermelons at them will pay a fine and court costs.

The Daily Times of Salisbury (http://delmarvane.ws/18U5fZX ) reports a judge on Tuesday gave the men unsupervised probation before judgment. That means if the men stay out of trouble for a year the conviction will disappear from their records. Each man must pay a $300 fine and court costs.

Police say the men were caught throwing the watermelons in the town of Bishopville around 1 a.m. on Oct. 4. They allegedly damaged 14 mailboxes, a trash can and a church sign. The total damage was estimated at $2,250. The men are members of the Lewes Fire Department and the Roxana Volunteer Fire Company according to the websites of the fire departments.
