ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The head of the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services is leaving the job.
Gov. Martin O'Malley announced Tuesday that Gary Maynard is departing after working at the helm of the department since 2007.
O'Malley also announced that Gregg Hershberger will take over the department. Hershberger is the deputy secretary for operations for the department with more than 31 years of experience.
O'Malley commended Maynard for reducing violence in the state prison system. It was under Maynard's leadership that the state closed the old Maryland House of Correction in 2007.
The O'Malley administration was criticized this year after a federal indictment of 25 people, including 13 correctional officers, at the Baltimore City Detention Center. Last month, 19 more people, including 14 current or former correctional officers, were charged.
