No academic village at UMd.

Wednesday - 10/23/2013, 8:57pm  ET

WASHINGTON - Plans to build an "academic village" on the University of Maryland's golf course are being dropped by developers.

In a letter to the school's president, the developers say growing opposition from political leaders is a major reason he's dropping the plans.

"As someone who loves the university, it was never my intent for this concept to become a political football or have the university become embroiled in political theater," developer Brian Gibbons said in the letter.

The Washington Post reports those conceptual plans were set to be unveiled tomorrow.

The plan would have included new housing and a new exit from the Capital Beltway to the College Park campus. The Post reports some county officials were worried attention would be taken from downtown College Park.
