HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. (AP) -- A man is dead after a barricade standoff in Havre de Grace that ended when a deputy fired at the suspect.
The Harford County Sheriff's Office says officers were called to an apartment on Erie Street on Saturday afternoon for the report of a fight in progress. Police say 34-year-old Austin Francis Jones of Havre de Grace was holding someone against that person's will.
Investigators say Jones barricaded himself in a room. A negotiation team was able to negotiate the hostage's release.
But as deputies were negotiating with Jones, investigators say deputies saw him make a gesture with a black object toward the officers. An officer shot Jones, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators say a woman living at the apartment had a protective order against Jones.
