SALISBURY, Md. (AP) -- A former city official on Maryland's Eastern Shore has admitted stealing thousands of dollars in public funds for personal use.

George Calloway, the former deputy director of public works and utilities for the city of Fruitland, pleaded guilty to the theft scheme in Wicomico County Circuit Court.

He didn't immediately return a call seeking comment Saturday.

The Daily Times of Salisbury ( ) reports that he'll be on probation for two years and was given a one-year suspended jail sentence.

Court records say Calloway bought 100 gallons of diesel fuel with public funds and filled his personal propane tanks with city money.

Authorities say Calloway also possessed items belonging to the city, including oil filters, a steel rack and first aid supplies. A city-owned computer was also seized from his home.
