Prince George’s Co. hospital on backup generators after fire

WASHINGTON – A local hospital remains on backup generators early Friday morning after a Thursday-night fire.

Prince George’s County Hospital Center, in the Cheverly, Md. area, says the fire broke out in a boiler room around 7:45 p.m. causing a “mini disaster.” Pepco shut power off to the building and the fire is contained.

However, hospital spokesperson Erika Murray tells WTOP that elective surgeries for Friday are canceled and patients were notified.

Hospital officials say they are diverting medevacs and ambulances, but still accepting emergency walk-in patients. Routine and elective surgeries scheduled for Friday have been canceled.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

No injuries were reported.
