CATONSVILLE, Md. (AP) -- Baltimore County police say a man suspected of fatally shooting a police officer has died.

Officers said Wednesday night that 25-year-old Tevon Smith of Catonsville died after being taken to Shock Trauma.

Police say 36-six-year-old Officer Jason Schneider was pronounced dead at Shock Trauma Wednesday morning during exchange of gunfire when officers tried to serve a search warrant at a Catonsville home.

Officers say Schneider was shot several times as he turned a corner, returning fire as he fell and striking a man.

Police say their preliminary investigation shows that Schneider's vest stopped several rounds, but one round traveled underneath his vest, striking him in the back.
