10,000 gallons of sewage overflow in Hyattsville

WASHINGTON – More than 10,000 gallons of untreated sewage spilled into the Beaverdam Branch Basin in Hyattsville, Md. Monday afternoon, officials say.

A work crew from the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission was nearby and smelled the stench. They were able to remove a log that was stuck in a sewer main, causing the overflow near 7400 Village Green Terrace.

The overflow started around 12:30 p.m. and was stopped by 3:50 p.m., WSSC says.

Residents should continue to avoid the area until lime is spread.
