CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) -- The state workers union says it's encouraged by the Maryland prison agency's response to an inmate assault that put a western Maryland correctional officer in the hospital.
Those responses include reassigning the security chief at North Branch Correctional Institution. And Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Secretary Gary Maynard says he's considering tighter security when inmates are moving outside their cells.
The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees says the announcement earlier Monday of the security chief's reassignment was a good start.
The group's Maryland President Patrick Moran said after the meeting that he's encouraged by Maynard's willingness to sit down with the prison staff to discuss making the maximum-security prison safer and more secure.
