Md. removes security chief at prison

Monday - 8/26/2013, 6:30pm  ET

TOWSON, Md. (AP) -- Maryland corrections officials say the chief of security at the North Branch Correctional Institution near Cumberland has been removed and reassigned.

The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services made the announcement Monday.

The chief of security was removed from the post because a correctional officer was not notified of a threat against him by an inmate. The officer ended up being injured in a stabbing. The department says an ongoing investigation has uncovered several deficiencies in how senior-level staff at the institution followed the notification policy.

The department also says the failure to notify the officer was found to be inadvertent.

The former security chief, who was not named by the department, will be reassigned, but remain in the department.

An investigation continues. Officials expect additional disciplinary action.
