CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) -- A corrections officer in western Maryland says he received a blood transfusion and was treated for about 10 stab wounds after being attacked by an inmate.

Herbert Hilliard spoke to the Times-News of Cumberland ( to put a "face on the story" of assaults on corrections officers.

The officer at the maximum-security North Branch Correctional Institution, near Cumberland, was one of about 250 people who attended a protest against prison management on Friday.

The 34-year-old Hilliard was attacked Monday morning. He says he spent the night in the hospital and suffered injuries to his ribs, arms and head.

After the attack Monday, a union for correctional officers criticized state prison managers, saying an inmate had warned in writing that an assault on an officer would soon take place.
