Medical students helped victim after car crashed into Sam’s Club (Video)

WASHINGTON – Three people — a 76-year-old man, a 33-year-old man and a 31- year-old mother of two — are recovering after they were struck by a car that crashed into the Sam’s Club in Gaithersburg, Md., Tuesday afternoon.

Dimas M. Chavez, 76, of Potomac lost part of his leg and had to be taken to to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, police say. He was in critical condition.

Two members of the military, who are medical students, provided emergency first aid to Chavez, police said. Ensign John Hunt and Wells Weymouth, a second lieutenant, helped Chavez.

The two, who are enrolled in Uniformed Services University, told NBC 4 they had just come from a training session.

Montgomery County police identified the other victims as Thaan Buithuan, age 33, of Boyds, Md., and Sheila R. Orellana, 31, of Derwood, Md.

Police say just before 1 p.m. Tuesday the 77-year-old driver of a gold Buick LeSabre, Subinoy Mazumdar, of North Potomac, first struck Orellana as she was walking through the parking lot of the store on North Frederick Avenue . Orellana suffered minor injuries and managed to push her children, who are 1 and 3, out of the way. They were not injured.

Then the Buick crashed into the interior of the building striking Chavez and Buithuan. Buithuan sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Suburban Hospital.

The driver, Mazumdar, was not injured, police say.

Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to call them at 240-773- 6620.

The building was damaged enough that a building inspector had to be called in.
