SALISBURY, Md. (AP) -- The Wicomico County Sheriff's Office says a couple reported that they've been scammed of thousands of dollars after being told they had won a well-known contest.
Deputies were contacted earlier this month by the couple, who said a man who claimed to be from Publisher's Clearinghouse in Las Vegas called them and said they had won $1 million.
The Daily Times of Salisbury reports (http://delmarvane.ws/1ba6yEb) that the man told the couple they had to pay $500 to get the prizes. The couple did, but the man kept on asking for more fees, until the couple paid more than $3,000.
The man even called while a deputy was at the couple's home, but hung up.
Deputies said the calls did not come from Last Vegas but Jamaica. The investigation is continuing.
