GLEN ARM, Md. (AP) -- An off-duty Baltimore police officer has died after his car struck an embankment and collided into two mailboxes.
Police say Shane Volk, a detective and former Marine, died shortly before 2 a.m. in the crash in Baltimore County.
Police say the 32-year-old Volk was driving north on Glen Arm Road when his Jeep Wrangler headed off the road and struck an embankment and two mailboxes. He was ejected from his car and pronounced dead at the scene.
Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts says Volk was well-liked and hard-working. He says Volk's father is a retired sergeant and his mother works with the department.
Volk joined the department in 2008 and became a detective last year. He worked in the Southern District.
