Man sentenced to life in slayings of 3 children

Monday - 4/29/2013, 3:38pm  ET

BALTIMORE (AP) -- A man convicted of conspiracy in the near-beheadings of three young relatives has been sentenced to life in prison.

A Baltimore City Circuit judge who sentenced 31-year-old Policarpio Espinoza Perez on Monday said he would be eligible for parole in 10 to 12 years.

Espinoza Perez was convicted last month in the 2004 slayings of Ricardo Espinoza, his sister, Lucero, and their cousin Alexis Quazada, at a Baltimore apartment. The children, between the ages of 8 and 10, were beaten with a bat and almost decapitated with a long knife.

This was Espinoza Perez's third trial. His first trial ended in a hung jury. He was convicted at a second trial, but that verdict was thrown out.

His former co-defendant, Adan Canela, will be tried next month.
