ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Dr. John LaFerla has formally filed his candidacy for the Democratic primary next year to run in Maryland's 1st District congressional race.

LaFerla filed Wednesday in Annapolis.

LaFerla says he wanted to get a quick start. He also says he plans to end his medical practice sometime this year to commit to the race full time.

LaFerla barely lost the last primary to Wendy Rosen, who dropped out abruptly in 2012 after the state Democratic Party found out she had voted in Maryland and Florida in 2006 and 2008.

LaFerla ended up running as a write-in candidate against Republican Rep. Andy Harris.

Harris won re-election with 63 percent of the vote.
