Md. Senate approves schools takeover plan for Prince George’s County

WASHINGTON – A shake-up for one of the area’s largest school systems moved one step closer Thursday night.

The full Maryland Senate has approved a modified version of Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker’s school takeover plan.

The school board has opposed Baker’s push for more control.

Under the version of the plan approved by the Senate the school board would be expanded.

The County Executive would appoint the chair and vice chair of the expanded board. Baker would also be able to choose the county’s new superintendent.

The expanded school board would keep control of the school system’s budget.

Prince George’s County Schools have struggled as compared to other systems in the region.

The takeover plan now goes to the House of Delegates.
