Assistant principal dies from bacterial meningitis

WASHINGTON – Accokeek Academy’s website displays a photo of the elementary school’s assistant principal along with a message:

“Our family is mourning the loss of our beloved Mrs. Mischa Ames,” the sign says.

The 42-year-old died following an apparent case of bacterial meningitis.

Prince George’s County health officials urge parents to be on the lookout for flu-like symptoms and rashes.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, some 4,100 cases are confirmed each year in the U.S. About 500 of those result in death.

It is spread through close personal contact.
