Another fire damages playground at Laurel park

WASHINGTON – Officials responded to another playground fire in Laurel Monday afternoon.

The city’s public information officer, Pete Piringer, tweeted that firefighters extinguished the fire at Emancipation Park near the Laurel Library around 5 p.m.

The damage is estimated at $80,000 to $100,000 and there were no injuries.

The city is offering a $5,000 reward on the heels of the third playground fire.

ABC7 reports police arrested two juveniles Saturday in connection with a fire at Gude Park.

WASHINGTON – Investigators believe a fire at a Laurel, Md. park that destroyed playground equipment was intentionally set.

Pete Piringer, a spokesman for the city, says Laurel police and the Prince George’s County Fire Department are investigating the fire Discovery Community Park at 1030 Harrison Drive.

Firefighters from multiple jurisdictions arrived on the scene around 3:50 p.m. Sunday after multiple receiving multiple 911 calls about heavy, black smoke in the area.

They arrived to find playground equipment fully engulfed in fire. Piringer says it took about ten to fifteen minutes to put out the fire. There were no injuries.

The investigation is still underway, but they do believe the fire was intentionally set. Piringer says the fire is estimated to have done between $75,000 and $100,000 in damage.

Laurel police are offering a $2,000 reward for any information about the fire. Anybody with information is asked to call 301.498.7645.
