PALMER PARK, Md. - Prince George's County police say an arrest has been made in the killing of a Maryland teenager gunned down while walking to school in Capitol Heights.
Police announced Monday that 20-year-old Travon Bennett has been arrested for the death of Marckel Ross. The 18-year-old was shot Sept. 11 while walking to Central High School. The 11th-grader was a track athlete at the school.
Bennett is charged with first- and second-degree murder. Police believe Ross was shot during an attempted robbery.
Police say Bennett has also been charged in another robbery, where a victim was shot and wounded.
After Ross's murder, an arrest warrant charged Bennett with a May 31 attack. Bennett was wanted for attempted murder, assault, gun use during a felony, reckless endangerment and theft.
Bennett was arrested for that earlier incident on Nov. 3rd, and indicted Dec. 19.
Police say the same gun was used in the Ross's murder and the May attack.
Police held a community meeting shortly after the shooting to ask for the community's help in solving the crime.
