Pr. George's officials reveal historic crime lows

Wednesday - 12/19/2012, 5:31pm  ET

PALMER PARK, Md. - Police and other officials in Prince George's County have announced what they say are historic lows in crime.

Officials say overall violent crime is down by 7.6 percent, and the numbers of homicides, robberies, burglaries and non-fatal shootings have also dropped.

The progress was announced at a Wednesday news conference by Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, County Executive Rushern Baker III, Police Chief Mark Magaw, State's Attorney Angela Alsobrooks and others.

County officials credit at least some of the crime reduction to a new program called the Transforming Neighborhoods Initiative, which focuses on job creation, social services and anti-crime programs in a half-dozen areas.
