W.Va. airport looks for PeoplExpress replacement

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A West Virginia airport has stopped promoting a PeoplExpress flight and is looking for other airlines to provide the service.

The nonstop flight from Charleston’s Yeager Airport to Orlando, Fla., was scheduled to begin Oct. 16. Newport News, Virginia-based PeoplExpress suspended flights in late September because of problems that included a shortage of crews and only one plane.

Yeager spent about $18,000 of a $400,000 federal grant to promote the flight. Media outlets say Yeager executive director Rick Atkinson told the airport’s governing board on Wednesday that he has rescinded using funds from the grant to promote the service.

Atkinson said the airport is looking for other airlines to provide the nonstop service.

He says Yeager could enter into a new agreement with PeoplExpress if the airline resumes flights.
