Young Md. man gets 13 years in armed robberies

BALTIMORE (AP) — A Maryland man has been sentenced to more than 13 years in prison in a spate of armed robberies over a 10-day period last year.

Twenty-one-year-old Joshua Payne of Mount Airy was sentenced Wednesday in federal court in Baltimore. Payne had pleaded guilty to robbery and firearm charges as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.

Prosecutors say that between Nov. 27 and Dec. 1 last year, Payne pointed a gun at gas station cashiers in Mount Airy, Eldersburg and Lisbon, stealing hundreds of dollars from the registers. On Dec. 6, prosecutors say Payne returned to the Mount Airy Shell gas station and threatened the cashier with a long kitchen knife, stealing nearly $700.

And on Nov. 29, prosecutors say Payne admitted to an armed carjacking.
