Retired Philadelphia officer fatally shot in Va.

SUFFOLK, Va. (AP) — A woman fatally shot in her home in southeastern Virginia has been identified as a retired Philadelphia police officer.

Suffolk police tell media outlets that officers found 69-year-old Virginia Mae Hill in her home around 5:30 a.m. Saturday. She later died at a local hospital.

Suffolk police are investigating Hill’s death as a homicide. No other details have been released.

In January 2002, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund named Hill as its officer of the month. A news release issued by the group at the time said Hill spent most of her career working to find missing children and investigating crimes against children. She began her law enforcement career as a transit officer in Philadelphia in 1977.
