Police catch suspect in Md. swim club shooting

WASHINGTON — Police have caught the suspect who allegedly shot and killed a man in a parking lot in Bowie, Maryland.

The fugitive squad for the Prince George’s County Police Department tracked down 19-year-old Deon Eugene Warren at an Anne Arundel County motel late Wednesday night.

Warren is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting of 39-year-old Mitchell White of Bowie. He’s being held without bond.

Police say White of Bowie went to the Belair Swim & Racquet Club Tuesday night to pick up his son.

Police say White was shot as he tried to break up a fight among a group of teenagers in the parking lot. One of those involved in the fight was White’s son.

“As our victim attempted to intervene, another subject, not the subject that was involved in the altercation with his son, produced a handgun and shot our victim one time,” said Prince George’s County Police Capt. Jimmy Simms at a news conference Wednesday.

Police say they have no indication at this point that the murder is gang related.

They are continuing to investigate and ask anyone with information to call 301-772-4925 or Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS.

Warren has a juvenile criminal record and was charged for drug offenses in 2013 and 2014.

Because the shooting happened so close to Bowie High School, Bowie police say they have increased their patrols at the school and will continue as long as necessary.
