Va. man convicted of 2nd-degree murder in shooting

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP) — A Martinsville man has been convicted of second-degree murder in a shooting that preceded a deadly car wreck.

Media outlets report that the Henry County Circuit Court jury recommended a 20-year sentence for 23-year-old Lamont Anthony Woods. Sentencing is set for Dec. 3.

Jurors deliberated for an hour Tuesday afternoon before finding Woods guilty. The jury also convicted Woods of maliciously shooting into a vehicle and use of a firearm in the commission of a murder.

Prosecutors say Woods shot 19-year-old Lamar Shonta Ward on April 28, 2012. The shooting led to a car wreck that killed three other people, including Ward’s his 6-month-old son, as Ward was being taken to a hospital.

Woods pleaded no contest on Monday to endangering the life of a child.
