Va. businessman gives to his alma mater, WVU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Virginia businessman Fred Tattersall is giving $1 million to West Virginia University to help business students dig out from their college debt.

Tattersall is a 1970 graduate of WVU’s College of Business and Economics. Under terms of his gift, top business students who meet certain criteria could be awarded up to $19,000 toward their college debt.

Tattersall is no stranger to giving to his alma mater. In 2010, he donated $3 million to endow a faculty chair in the college’s Finance Department.

Tattersall is a former trustee at the University of Virginia. He was elected to the Greater Richmond Business Hall of Fame in 2009.

Tattersall is an investment executive.

The giving was announced Friday.
