Va. DMV cranking out birth certificates

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia is celebrating a baby boom of sorts.

The boom involves the sale of birth certificates at the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. This month, that number topped 50,000 under a partnership with the state Division of Vital Records.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe calls the partnership a “model of responsive service and convenience.”

The birth certificate service at the DMV began on March 1. The department saw a surge in birth certificate transactions in August as parents sought them to enroll their children in schools.

DMV Commissioner Richard D. Holcomb says customers have been pleasantly surprised that the DMV offers birth certificate service.
