Massachusetts college student dies in fall

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — A Worcester Polytechnic Institute sophomore from Maryland has died in a fall from a parking garage.

Officials at the Massachusetts college identified the victim as 19-year-old Patrick Theron Degenhardt of Marriottsville, Maryland.

Police say they responded to the parking garage not far from campus at about 11:30 p.m. Monday “for a report of a male who possibly fell from the building and appeared to be deceased.”

Degenhardt was found unresponsive on the ground. He was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

WPI President Laurie Leshin called Degenhardt a “vibrant member of the WPI family.”

The Telegram & Gazette (http://bit.ly/1qXzFRF ) reports that Degenhardt was studying computer science and was on the dean’s list last spring.

The investigation is ongoing.
