Ceremony marks anniversary of Navy Yard shooting

WASHINGTON (AP) — Top Navy officials and family members are among more than 2,000 people marking the one-year anniversary of the Washington Navy Yard shootings a year after 12 people were killed.

The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/1ybJAbo ) reports that during a memorial service Tuesday morning, Navy Vice Adm. William Hilarides, the commander of Naval Sea Systems Command, read the name of each person who died. Each name was followed by the toll of a bell.

An evening memorial service also is planned. Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer will speak to honor those who died, including three of his constituents. The congressman also will thank first responders and law enforcement. Washington Mayor Vincent Gray also is scheduled to attend the ceremony.

The gunman, a former Navy reservist, was fatally shot by police.
