Most livable cities? Arlington is No. 3

Livibility.com has released its second annual list of the Top 100 Best Places to Live and Arlington ranks No. 3.

The rankings are based on economics, housing, amenities, infrastructure, demographics, social and civic capital, education and health care, as well as surveys of residents. It considered small and medium-sized cities with populations between 22,000 and 350,000.

“Arlington is an upscale community whose largest employer is the government of the U.S.,” Livibility.com said in its ranking. “The median home price in Arlington is $600,000, and local students can attend classes at the campuses of George Mason University and Marymount University.”

It also cites Arlington’s median income of more than $102,000 and an unemployment rate of 3.69 percent.

And to think, Sen. Kristen Gillibrand, D-New York, just last week drew some heat for calling Arlington a “soulless suburb” in her new book, according to ARLnow. Gillibrand later apologized on Twitter.

Madison, Wisconsin, ranked No. 1 on this year’s list, followed by Rochester, Minnesota; Arlington; Boulder, Colorado; and Palo Alto, California.

A total of eight cities in the Washington-Baltimore region made the Top 100 list:

  • No. 3 Arlington
  • No. 19 Rockville
  • No. 32 Frederick
  • No. 42 Towson
  • No. 63 Alexandria
  • No. 72 Silver Spring
  • No. 64 North Bethesda
  • No. 94 Tysons Corner
