Case dropped in incident during W.Va. tunnel blaze

PRINCETON, W.Va. (AP) — The case against two out-of-state firefighters for an incident during a blaze in a tunnel along the Virginia-West Virginia border has been dismissed.

The Bluefield Daily Telegraph reports (http://bit.ly/1szCh8D) that the obstruction charges against 30-year-old Virginia Price of Maine and 30-year-old Colin Dunn of Maryland were dropped Thursday.

The pair was facing charges for taking an emergency vehicle and entering East River Mountain Tunnel during the July tractor-trailer blaze.

In a letter to Mercer County prosecutors, attorney Andrew Maier wrote that he spoke with officials from two local fire departments that said they wanted no punishment for the out-of-state volunteers.

In addition to the charges being dropped, Maier is planning to ask officials to issue a commendation for the pair’s efforts to help evacuate the tunnel and battle the blaze.
