What’s up with the White Flint post office?

New White Flint Post Office location on Nicholson Lane

(Update at 10:45 a.m.) There’s still no opening date for the White Flint Post Office that was supposed to open in July at a new North Bethesda location.

The United States Postal Service let residents know last summer it was going to move the post office in White Flint Mall (11301 Rockville Pike) at the end of its lease in May 2014. The mall is planning a redevelopment project and only department store Lord & Taylor and restaurant P.F. Chang’s remain.

USPS decided to close the White Flint Mall location in April, to the surprise of some. As USPS continued building out its new White Flint Post Office location at 5056-B Nicholson Lane, customers were directed to the Kensington Post Office. The Kensington Post Office also temporarily took over the White Flint location’s P.O. box service.

But the Nicholson Lane location has yet to open.

Sign on the front door of the new White Flint Post Office location says there is no opening dateA sign on the door says the post office is still under construction and there is no opening date.

Laura Dvorak, USPS spokesperson for the Washington metropolitan area, said construction is complete “except for a few minor cleanup items and the installation of the postal furnished equipment.”

She said installation is now being scheduled.

At a meeting of the Friends of White Flint last week, Executive Director Lindsay Hoffman said she’s attempted to find out when the new location would open with little success. She also said she heard one reason for the delay was that USPS ordered P.O. boxes that didn’t fit in the new location.
