Police identify woman killed in pedestrian crash

WASHINGTON — Prince George’s County police have identified the mother who died after she and her daughter were hit crossing a busy street Monday.

She’s 31-year-old Thelma Fernandez Flores of Riverdale, police say.

Prince George’s County police say her 3-year-old daughter remains in critical condition.

Fernandez Flores and her daughter were crossing Riverdale Road near the intersection with Kenilworth Avenue.

Jonathan Escobar was turning onto Riverdale Road and saw the driver approaching the mother and daughter carrying a bag of groceries, crossing the street.

“He was coming really fast and the only thing I saw and heard was the woman screamed and grabbed her child to protect her,” Escobar says.

Police are investigating whether speed played a role in the accident.

“I saw him coming really fast and it looked like he was probably on his phone because how do you not see a lady crossing with her daughter,” Escobar says.

Witnesses say the two were in the crosswalk at the time. Police are still investigating and say the driver stayed on the scene.

The intersection where the accident sees a lot of foot traffic and Esobar says it’s dangerous.

“They should make a street light here or something like that because there’s a middle school down here and kids are crossing every afternoons and mornings,” he says.

A grocery store and a church sit near the intersection.

Police are asking anyone who knows anything about what happened to call them at 301- 731-4422.
