WASHINGTON (AP) — A judge has ruled that a District of Columbia nonprofit group illegally diverted nearly $1 million that was supposed to be used for a summer youth program to instead pay an executive director and accountant.
Officials with the D.C. attorney general’s office announced the decision Friday against Washington East of the River Academy. The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/1nLfQrD ) reports Superior Court Judge Maurice Ross awarded summary judgment in the case Aug. 12 for $931,200 that the D.C. Council awarded for the program in 2009.
Prosecutors said the executive director, Dianna Robinson, and the group’s accountant, Darrell Johnson, misused the funds. After securing the grant, prosecutors say they submitted expenditure reports to the D.C. Children and Youth Investment Trust Corporation and falsely reported the grant was being spent on the youth program.
