WASHINGTON -- A woman riding a moped has died after being struck by a truck on Connecticut Avenue in the District, according to D.C. police.

D.C. Fire & EMS spokesman Tim Wilson says that the accident happened directly in front of Engine Company 31 between Ellicot Street and Nebraska Avenue around 8:30 Friday morning.

"A witness came in and alerted the members that were inside. Immediately, the rest of the members of the fire house ... ran out and assessed the situation and provided some medical care to the patient," Wilson says.

"They self-dispatched themselves at 8:26 a.m. If I had to go back and look at the logs, the dispatch-to-response time would probably be seconds."

Police say the accident is still under investigation but the driver of the truck remained on the scene.
