D.C. is America’s ‘coolest’ city? That’s what Forbes says

Washington, D.C. offers plenty to do and enough of a young population for Forbes to rank the city No. 1 on its 2014 list of America’s Coolest Cities.

How did Washington get to the top of the list?

Forbes considered six factors: Entertainment options per capita, bars and restaurants per capita, farmers markets per capita, breweries per capita, cultural make-up and youthful population.

Forbes says among Washington’s best features are abundant entertainment and recreational options, an ethnically and culturally diverse population and a big chunk of the population that’s 20 to 34 years old.

It also notes Washington’s constantly refreshing population, which has grown by 4.9 percent since 2010 thanks to net migration alone.

Washington is one of just six East Coast cities that made the Forbes Coolest list. Eight California metros received high marks on the list.

Seattle ranked No. 2 on its list of America’s Coolest Cities, followed by Austin, Texas, Houston and San Francisco.
