Funnel cloud report shuts Va. bridge-tunnel

CAPE CHARLES, Va. (AP) — Operators closed the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel for about half an hour after a funnel cloud was reported over the water between Cape Charles and Kiptopeke.

Media outlets report that the bridge-tunnel closed around 12:20 p.m. Tuesday and reopened shortly before 1 p.m.

National Weather Service meteorologist Bridget De Rosa tells The Virginian-Pilot that the funnel cloud didn’t threaten anyone on land.

A marine warning issued by the weather service expired at 1:15 p.m.

DeRosa says any kind of water spout should be taken seriously because winds can range from 50 to 100 miles per hour.
