Body in James River identified as missing boater

JAMESTOWN, Va. (AP) — Authorities have identified a body that was found in the James River as that of a boater who had been missing.

Laurie Naismith with the Virginia Marine Resources Commission said Tuesday that the body of Kenneth Leary of Lanex was identified through fingerprints.

Naismith says a jet skier found Leary’s body Sunday evening.

A report by Marine Police chief investigating officer D.E. Bond says Leary was the operator of a 20-foot boat that was found washed ashore in Spring Grove on Sunday morning. Leary’s cell phone and wallet were found on the boat.

Bond’s report says a passenger in the boat, Theresa Digby, was found holding onto an old piling by the Surry Ferry landing. She was taken to a hospital.

Digby told investigators that she fell off the boat.
