Police ID suspect shot at Va. retirement community

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) — Roanoke County police have identified a suspect shot by an officer at a retirement community.

Police say in a news release that 59-year-old Dennis Michael Wright of Roanoke is charged with attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer, attempted malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer and several weapons counts.

Police say the suspect entered the Health and Rehab Center at Friendship Retirement Community around 11 p.m. Monday and fired a shot into the ceiling. He then ordered the staff to leave.

Police say Officer P. McMillan encountered Wright in the lobby and ordered him to drop a handgun and a BB gun. Wright complied but then picked up the handgun and aimed it at the officer. He was shot in an exchange of gunfire and remains hospitalized.
