IRS employees complain building makes them sick

WASHINGTON – Some IRS employees say their offices are making them sick.

They tell Fox5 they’ve complained about the working conditions in a building on Oxon Hill Road in Prince George’s County. The workers are concerned because there’s been a rash of illnesses recently and they believe the 25-year-old building, where the agency leases office space, is to blame.

In a statement, the IRS says officials have met with employees to hear their complaints and ordered a comprehensive environmental study to be conducted today.

“At this time we have no specific evidence that shows the building at 6009 Oxon Hill, Oxon Hill, Maryland, to be unhealthy,” according to the statement. “And as we receive test results, (we) will brief employees and other tenants of the facility.”

The study includes testing of the air quality and HVAC system. The IRS expects to receive the results within 2 weeks.

The General Services Administration, which has oversight of the building, tells WTOP they are working with the IRS to figure out what is going on at the facility.
