Bethesda’s Winchester Homes part of $2.8B merger

Irvine, California-based TRI Pointe Homes Inc. has acquired Weyerhaeuser Co.’s homebuilding division, which includes Bethesda-based Winchester Homes.

The $2.8 billion deal is one of the largest homebuilding mergers ever and makes TRI Pointe (NYSE: TPH) one of the 10 largest public homebuilders in the country.

Winchester Homes will continue to operate under its 35-year-old name and be led by its current management team, TRI Pointe said.

Winchester, which builds throughout the Washington region, is one of five Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Co. homebuilders acquired. Others include Pardee Homes, which builds in Southern California and Las Vegas, Quadrant Homes, in Washington state, Maracay Homes in Arizona and Trendmaker Homes in Texas.

Winchester has built more than 12,000 single-family homes and townhome communities in D.C., Maryland and Virginia.
