Shoplifting suspect jumps into pond, dies

HANOVER, Md. (AP) _ Anne Arundel police say a body recovered from a pond area near Arundel Mills mall is that of a shoplifting suspect.

Police say the man fled from mall security officers on Monday night, jumped into a three-acre stormwater runoff pond and began to swim.

Police say the man appeared at one point to dive head first into the pond, which is thick with sediment and underwater vegetation, and did not resurface.

The body was recovered about 11:15 p.m. Monday from near the middle of the pond and turned over to the medical examiner.

Police said Tuesday that the man has not yet been positively identified.
