Spotsylvania girl drowns during holiday festivities

WASHINGTON — Celebration turns to tragedy for one family on this Independence Day.

A 7 year old girl drowned in Spotsylvania, Virginia while waiting to see a fireworks show at Lake Wilderness.

Around 8:30 p.m. Friday evening, Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a missing child call in the Lake Wilderness 2 Subdivision in Western Spotsylvania County.

The girl’s family had been searching for about a half an hour. After learning that the girl had been near the water, deputies immediately contacted the Rescue and Dive Team.

After a water search, the girl’s body was discovered around 10 p.m.
