RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia is getting a bonus from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for its performance using the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
Gov. Terry McAuliffe said Friday that the Virginia Department of Social Services is getting $1.7 million.
Each year the USDA awards performance bonuses to the eight states with the best and most improved program access index. It also awards bonuses to the states with the highest rate of timely processed applications.
Virginia was recognized for have the lowest payment error rate in the country.
More than 908,000 Virginians are part of the program. Last fiscal year, Virginia issued $1.4 billion in benefits.
Officials say the funds will be used to continue to enhance program performance, bolster training and automation and streamline local administration of the program.
