Va. woman sentenced to time served in kids’ deaths

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A Prince George County woman has been sentenced to time served for the deaths of her two children.

Brittney R. Downing spent 72 days in jail following her arrest in May 2013. She pleaded guilty in August 2013 to involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment.

Media outlets report that Henrico County Circuit Court Judge Gary Hicks sentenced the 23-year-old Downing on Tuesday to time served and probation. He also ordered her to perform 100 hours of community service.

Downing was working at a motel in suburban Richmond when she left her 3-month-old daughter, Jade, and 20-month-old son, Jelani, in a car over a seven-hour period on May 26, 2013. The girl died that evening at home and the boy died a few days later at a hospital.
