Richmond woman sentenced in newborn’s death

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A Richmond woman has been sentenced for the death of her newborn daughter, who was left in a trash bin.

Media outlets report that Richmond Circuit Court Judge Clarence N. Jenkins Jr. sentenced 28-year-old ShaVaughn Robinson to seven years in prison on Wednesday, and then suspended two years of the term.

Jenkins also gave Robinson credit for time she has spent in jail since her arrest. She will serve about 47 months.

Robinson was convicted of second- degree murder on May 1. Jurors recommended a seven-year sentence.

Authorities say a janitor found the body of Robinson’s newborn daughter in a plastic trash bag in a trash bin on May 28, 2013.

The Medical Examiner’s Officer determined that the infant died from asphyxiation.
