McAuliffe suspends work on Capitol renovation

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe says he’s suspending work on a planned $300 million renovation at the state Capitol.

McAuliffe announced his intent to halt the work at a Friday news conference at the Capitol.

The General Assembly approved money for building projects earlier this year. The plans call for a new office building and parking deck for state lawmakers and the renovation of Richmond’s Old City Hall.

McAuliffe said it sends the wrong signal to Virginians to start an expensive construction project on state facilities when there are other budget needs.
