Va.-based Coast Guard cutter getting new command

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) — A change of command is scheduled for the Portsmouth-based Coast Guard cutter Legare.

Vice Adm. William “Dean” Lee will preside over the ceremony Thursday. Cmdr. Todd Vance will assume the duties and responsibilities as commanding officer from Cmdr. Kevin King.

King was at command of the 201-foot cutter for two years. He led his crew through five southern patrols resulting in the seizure of more than 6 tons of cocaine valued at $201 million. Thirty suspected smugglers were also detained.

The Legare also assisted in recovery operations after Hurricane Isaac hit the Gulf Coast.
