The group is among 500 Washington Fellows who will participate in a six-week leadership, academic and mentoring program in cities across the U.S.

The program at U.Va. begins Monday. U.S. Sen. Tim Kane will deliver the keynote address.

The university is hosting the group as part of a consortium called the Presidential Precinct. The consortium also includes the College of William & Mary, Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, James Madison's Montpelier, James Monroe's Ash Lawn-Highland and U.Va.'s Morven.

Members of the group come from 18 counties across Africa. They include teachers, journalists and human rights activists.
